Shih Tzus are robust little dogs with small muzzles and big, dark brown eyes as their typical features. Chinese people have been known to refer to their mouths as “frog mouths” and their head forms as “owl head” and “lion head.” Their long, velvety double coat is prone to matting and tangling if it isn’t groomed at least every two to three days. The optimal height and weight for a Shih Tzu are 26.7 cm (101⁄2″) at the withers and 4.0 to 7.5 kg (9 to 17 lb). Their tail is thickly furred and coiled over the back, and their floppy ears are coated in lengthy fur. Although blazes of gray and white are common, the coat can be any color. As A Regular grooming, which can be costly, is required due to their lengthy coat and rapidly growing hair.
